About Erie Canal

Do barges still carry stuffs?

No, they don’t carry stuffs any more. Since the 1990s, the canal system has been used primarily by recreational traffic, although a small but growing amount of cargo traffic still uses it.

For the happiness

For the happiness

Myunghee

Even if the life makes you sick, do not cry or feel down.

When your heart feels down,
Just sit anywhere without doing anything.
One day, the happiest day will hug you.

There is no question that the sickness has the end.
All of things will be gone in one moment.

By tomorrow, the happiness will back.

I am falling in spring

  I am falling in spring

                                                            Myunghee Lee

I took a walk on a cool spring day.

Many flowers bring spring to me
Forsythia, Cherry bloom, Magnolia and unknown flowers
It smells colorful color of spring
These flowers are fallen in spring to me

A sprout bring spring to me
Various trees are coming into leaf
It sees green of spring
These trees are fallen in spring to me

Birds bring spring to me
The birds are singing a song to cerebrate spring
It sounds a song of spring
These birds are fallen in spring to me

Spring fever bring spring to me
The spring has me take nap on moss
It touches a sweet of spring
This fever is fallen in spring to me

Susan B. Anthony House: "Why can't women vote? The law should be changed."

My first visiting to Susan B. Anthony was in 2009 with my friend. Before visiting there, I didn’t know about her and the fact that woman didn’t have a right to vote.  After visiting there, I have thanked to her efforts, that is, women in all of America and most other countries can vote.

Susan B. Anthony
Susan B. Anthony fought for women's rights. More than any other person she was responsible for women winning the right to vote in America. She was born in Adams, Massachusetts in 1820 and died in Rochester, New York in 1906. At her time, only men could vote. She thought, "Why can't women vote? The law should be changed." She talked about this to people all around the country. In 1872, she voted, but her vote wasn’t counted and she was sent to jail because she broke the election law. When she died in 1906, women were allowed to vote in only four states. However, in 1920, 14 years after her death, women in the United States finally won the right to vote. In Rochester, we have a house that was the home of Susan B. Anthony. She had lived the house while she was a national figure in the women’s rights movement. Her house is located at 17 Madison Street in Rochester with the Susan B. Anthony Museum. Recently, in order to keep Susan B. Anthony's vision alive and relevant, the Susan B. Anthony House is a learning center and museum open to the public for tours and some programs. To get more information, you can visit this Web site: http://susanbanthonyhouse.org/index.php

Food Information

Where does your food information come from? Give an example. How does this information affect what you eat?

In my country, South Korea, a place-of-origin indication system was implemented on the agricultural products and meat kinds even those are included in any other products.  In addition, they have to sign the producer’s name either. The government made such a rule and it is very strict, so if someone violates the rule they could get a big fine. Therefore, I can trust their report on the products and I buy the products with seeing their label. It was very helpful for me to buy foods.

My favorite buying foods from Wegmans
However, I struggled to buy foods and its products in the U.S at first because I don’t have any information about them. Only I could rely on my friends’ comments and advices. With their recommendation, I tried to eat at first, and then, if I was satisfied with some of them, I kept in mind some the loyalty for such food. For example, I am used to go to Wegmans to buy organic dairy products (milk, yogurt, and chesses), organic vegetable and fruit, and sometimes-organic meat even though their price is high. I have still bought same blend products  because I have not gotten any new information about food and my expenditure is limited on food.

Human Rights During Wartime

The title of the exhibit
Polish Heritage Society of Rochester, and the Jewish Federation of Rochester bring us the exhibit; Polish Heroes: Those who Rescued Jews. The exhibit is going to display at the Shults Center Forum at Nazareth College until February 19, 2012.  The exhibit is a unique photographic exhibition created as a tribute to the more than 6,000 individuals in Poland who have been recognized for sheltering Jewish people during WWII. Their stories, written in English and in Polish accompany their photographic portraits. We can see the pictures and individual stories of 21 such recipients who all live in the Krakow region of Poland today.

Honarata Mucah
According to their story, their human rights did not exist during the wartime even their own country. They had to take shelter and they didn’t have enough food to live only they could move to find food at night 18 months until the end of war (Honarata Mucah’s saying). In hence, they used to see their family and friends’ death. There are not even basic human rights. We could imagine how they were scared and anxious at that time without any safety.

The human dignity of all individuals must be respected at all times even during wartime. We could realize how inhumane the war was to people though this exhibition. In these days, we have a lot of conventions among nations to preserve human rights during the war such as giving medical services, foods, and civilian’s safety at least. Any country must abide by these promises and keep in mind. In addition we have to remember their faces and stories in one exhibition to respect human rights.

What do I think who I am?

What do I think who I am?
In my wallet, I have several shopper’s membership cards, one Debit card, two student ID cards, and health insurance card. Also, I have a memo that is, some of emergence phone numbers.
Let me see, what is my identity from my wallet’s items? Based on my wallet, I like to buy grocery at the Wegamans and sometimes at the CVS either. In addition, I am interested in a Health food so I usually go to the GNC to buy vitamins and some health foods. I am very serious to choose some food for myself that I consider organic and fresh food. I really enjoy watching movie but that have to spend much money. However, when I have their membership, I can have a little discount so that is good for me. I am not using a credit card to buy something but I am using a Chase Debit Card because I don’t have enough credit record in the U.S. In addition, I am a PhD student and a language leaner at different school. That is why I have two students ID cards. As a student, I must have a health insurance and I can proof my insurance from my health insurance card. In hence, because I am international student, I may need someone’s helps in the emergency so I have several phone number in my wallet.
I think I can’t explain all of me from my wallet’s items but I could briefly see myself.  Unfortunately, I don’t have many items in my wallet. If I lose my wallet and find it after a couple of years, I may not figure out current myself. In addition, if someone fined my wallet, he/she is unable to know about me. He/she might imagine me who likes healthy food, must be hypochondriasis, and love a watching movie. In addition they may wonder why I have two student’s IDs but they can guess that I am PhD student. I think they could imagine my personality and values but that can’t represent whole or true me.

Jan. 18.2012. In Class Activity

Jan. 18.2012.  In Class Activity

What is American Values?
We have the first class activity that we had to search for American values. Debra   who is one of our teachers explained what American values are via her own word. From her description, we could get several information and guidelines. Before making a team, our guidelines for American value was freedom, equality, hard work/opportunity, informality, independence/self-reliance, individualism, time, and direct communication. My team members were three of us, Eric, Ben and me. With our guidelines and Erick’s camera, we went to cafeteria in Golisano ground floor to look for American values in real situation especially in collage.

Above all, our team discussed how we would make our plan for this activity. We made a list what could represent American values following the guidelines and what we should get a photo for it’s representation.

I want to show our result of a discussion blow.

*. Equality
The feature of equality in the U.S. could see in the gender that is, between female and male. Specially, they are considered equally everywhere such as an opportunity of education, employment, and political empowerment. In addition, after the American Civil War, they don’t have race discrimination. So we could see all races in school, workplace and even political area.

*. Freedom and informality
Freedom is the symbol of the U.S. for long times, it might have been since the independence from British. We would freely come up with the freedom when we see the U.S. flag. Also we figured out such freedom in our discussion. In terms of our thoughts the student who are sitting on the floor to waiting for their next class could represent the freedom because they don’t mind any others’ view. It may relate to informality either. In classroom, we could realize the freedom and informality from American teacher and students. They are usually wearing casual clothes for their classes.  As blow the picture, they are in the academic conference but they are wearing free styled clothes each person.

*. Hard work/opportunity
According to our searching, we saw a lot of students who were studying hard even the cafeteria. Eating some food they studied very hard. Form these students we felt that could be real American’s hard working in school.

*. Individualism (time/space constructs)
We saw a number of students were seating alone for eating or studying for whole table in the cafeteria. In our thoughts, they mind seating together or they don’t want to interrupt from others during their working. Our team asked several students and took the picture of them. But I didn’t get those pictures unfortunately.

*. Independence/self-reliance
We met one female student and asked interview. With her allowance, we could ask several questions. She is Laurin Murray, junior in Nazareth Collage. She is working in two restaurants after school for her life expenses because she live with her friend, no parents, so she have to make money by herself.  I was surprised her sounds and I asked her how she got her tuition for collage. She has gotten a government funding that could fully cover her tuition. Also, after working these restaurants she has studied for her academic grade and her future careers. She is a real American college student. She is a truly independent person from her parents and others and she is very hard worker for her career.

I was very interested in her interview because it would be different with my culture. In my country, South Korea, most of us are getting support from parents before marriage or getting a job.  Most parents tell us if we have a time for making money we have to concentrate on studying for our future. In addition, parents say, we have to make money for our children in the future so we don’t need to make money even in collage hood.  It would be one of big differences between two cultures.

*. Time
In the U.S., we can easily see the sign of an available time in front of office or store’s door. So if we go to there out of that time we could not use their services. We got a couple of pictures and a time schedule of cafeteria.

*. Direct communication
We didn’t get any information related to direct communication but I have believed that we could experience during these classes and living in the U.S.
